The name rubellite is derived from the Latin word "rubellus" which means "red". Rubellite belongs to the family of tourmaline. There a total of six different types of tourmalines of which rubellites belong to the elbaite variety of tourmaline. the chemical formula for the elbaite variety is [Na(Li,Al)3Al6(Bo3)3 Si6O18(OH)4] with magnesium. Tourmalines are available in shades of pink and red, However all pink or red tourmalines are not rubellites. Rubellite is a unique characteristic of maintaining a steady color under daylight and fluorescent light. On the other hand tourmaline tend to show an array of tones under different light sources. Rubellite have inclusions, the smaller and the finer inclusions are most valuable. Rubellites are originated from Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria and Pakistan. Rubellites are known for its exclusive colors and for its rarity. It is a collector's special gem which is worth the investment. The inclusions in the rubellites are basically due to the presence of the magnesium deposits. Inclusions are acceptable and the color intensity is more sought for. Rubellite enhances passion and love. It has a strong effect on body's immune system and detoxifies the blood. It is said to strengthen the reproductive system and cures back ache. The luster ranges from transparent to opaque. Rubellites have strong piezoelectric and pyroelectric characteristic. The hardness of rubellites is 7.0 - 7.5, with a specific gravity of 3.06 and refractive index of 1.62 - 1.64.
