Ametrine is a wonderful variety of quartz. It is a mixture of amethyst and citrine formed naturally due to the oxidation states of iron content within the crystal. If the oxidation state which occurred due to the temperature gradient where not in favor we would never have come to know about this combination and we would have seen amethyst and citrines separately.
The legendary tale of ametrine started when Don Luis Felipe, a conquistador married Princess Anahi, Bolivia’s Ayoreos tribe and received the mine as dowry. He then explored and mined the area and then gifted the first ametrine stone to his wife. This was when the gemstone was introduced to Europe.
Ametrine is also known as trystine or bolivianite in trade. The first known origin was Bolivia and later many traces where mined in India and Brazil. Amethyst is a very powerful stone with many high spiritual and healing properties. Amethyst is the violet variety of the quartz. Citrine is the yellow to gold variety of the quartz. Citrine improves financial status and protects one from negative energy. When amethyst and citrine combine the stone adds more spiritual and high energy to one. This is what makes an Ametrine a power stone and has high value. The beauty of this stone is that thought it is a combination of both amethyst and citrine the pricing is nominal and was never hiked. Faceting an ametrine is another beauty to explore. It is also said to be a challenge to any gemstone cutters because the color dispersion should be planned and centered while cutting the stone. It is also said that no two ametrine can look alike. Many creative cutters have made wonderful use of this color play and have created many artistic landscapes and carvings.
Ametrine is a very durable stone and is suited for many jewelry uses. The hardness of ametrine lies between 6.5 – 7.0. It has a specific gravity of 3.26-3.36 and the refractive index is 1.67-1.69. The chemical content of ametrine is Silicon dioxide (SiO2) with traces of iron. The physical characteristic is said to be choncoidal which means shell like. Ametrine in general is said to reflect the planets Mercury, Neptune and Jupiter and the new innovation have proved that it also reflects the planet Pluto.
