Sapphire is the birthstone of the month September
The sapphire name was basically derived from the Greek word Sappeiros which means Blue stone. Both Sapphire and Ruby belong to the mineral corundum, Sapphire is the blue variety of the mineral corundum as originated. There are also other colors of sapphires like pink, yellow, padparadscha, green, orange, and also colorless. The most sought and rare among the sapphires are the royal blue or ink blue sapphire which is the most valuable of all. Dr. Edward Gubelin quoted the royal blue sapphire as "imbued with a silken, velvety sheen, leading the glance into its hidden depths, rendered as unfathomable as mountain lakes by a tiny trace of cobalt blue." The next color defined is the cornflower blue sapphire.
Sapphires originate from Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Madagascar, Montana (USA), Nigeria, Tanzania, Thailand and Vietnam. Of which the most famous and the world's best sapphire originate from Srilanka and Kashmir, however Kashmir sapphires are scarce. The hardness is 9, with a refractive index of 1.76–1.78 and a specific gravity of 3.97–4.05.
