Tsavorite was first discovered by gemologist Dr. Campbell R. Bridges in the mountains near North eastern Tanzania. This was inspected and was found to be a green variety of the Grossular garnet. The name Tsavorite was proposed by Tiffany Co after the great Tsavo National park in Kenya, this was the place where Dr. Campbell was murdered for his property by a Mob.
Tsavorite is a rare variety of the garnet family and has the green color due to the presence of vanadium and chromium. The best clean green ones are the most valued and connoisseurs most sought for. These Tsavorite garnets improve financial status and reduce money anxiety. Egyptians and Greek people believed that Tsavorite garnet manifests the wearer to get closer to spirituality and was said to cure heart diseases and invokes the senses.
Tsavorite has a wonderful long geological history. Dr. Campbell who first found this great gem had a very tough time in protecting the minerals from gangsters. While his expedition in Tsavo, which was believed to have predators, mobs and venomous snakes, he had to safeguard himself from predators so he stayed in tree houses and to protect his treasure he used a python amidst the green garnets to protect robbery. Tsavorite was treasured for its scarcity and for the brilliant color. It is considered as the king of garnets for the same reason and many sought for more mines and still it remained a rarity. The hardness is 7.5 on the Mohs scale. The specific gravity is 3.62–4.30 and the refractive index is 1.72–1.94. Tsavorites are not known to be enhanced.
